Cost of Living in Malaysia
Another attraction for international students to study in Malaysia is the relatively low cost of living. The total cost of expenditure for accommodation, either on-campus or off-campus, is reasonable and within many budgets.
The amount of money you will require for your day-to-day living expenses will vary for each student depending on the lifestyle. As a general estimate, a single student living off campus should plan to spend up to RM15,000 (USD3,750) per annum inclusive of transportation, food, accommodation, personal expenditure and entertainment. The cost of accommodation and transportation constitute a substantial portion of the off-campus expenses. If a student live in campus, the average cost of living for a student living on campus is about RM10,000.00 per year.

The cost of accommodation varies widely depending on the location and the type of accommodation. The average monthly rental for a off campus single room (twin sharing) per student is between RM 300 to RM 450 (USD86 – USD 129).
Food
There are many food shops near universities and colleges that cater for students. On average, a student spends about RM500 a month on food.
Public Transport
If you are staying in campus or walking distance to campus, you will incur very little travelling cost. For an average student, travelling around the city may cost an approximate RM30 to RM50 per month.
Books and Stationery
Estimated to be around RM50 a month. It may vary widely depending on the requirement of your course.
Other Personal Expenses
Personal expenses depend on your lifestyle. For an average student, personal expenses comes to RM100 and RM300 inclusive of socialising needs, toiletries, haircut, clothes, etc. The figure vary widely depending on location and your personal lifestyle.
